Dartmoor pony, Haytor, Devon
Sometimes at Haytor you don’t come across any Dartmoor ponies and sometimes they’re around every corner! These beautiful ponies are iconic to Dartmoor and bring such life and character to the moor. I loved taking this photograph of a grey mare quietly grazing with the stunning panoramic views behind.
In my illustration I wanted to highlight the glow of the beautiful grey pony with the grey blues of the big skies behind, plus the swaling that had been carried out recently in the area. Swaling is controlled burning of vegetation which manages the landscape, reducing overgrown vegetation which can be a wildfire risk, and encouraging new growth and better grazing for livestock. The Dartmoor National Park website explains the swaling process. Swaling leaves blackened, dramatic sticks of vegetation in swathes across the landscape which is iconic to Dartmoor and a familiar sight to regular walkers.

My Local Landmarks series are a collection of hand-drawn illustrations that I have chosen to draw because they mean something to me - maybe I just love a building or the character, or have memories of fun family trips there, or I think they represent my home county of Devon in an interesting way.
